Shaded Fuel Break Example: Cone Fire

Tree canopies shade a partially-cleared area under them.

This picture shows results of the Cone Fire where a shaded fuel break treatment was applied. Note the tree spacing from thinning, limbs trimmed up 6-10 feet from the ground, brush cleared, and no ladder fuels allowing groundfire to climb to canopy.

Trees look like sticks with nothing but ash around.

This picture shows the result in an area without a shaded fuel break. Note the crowded condition of the trees and the grey ash indicating a hot fire where fuel load was dense.
